Managerial Economics: A Problem-Solving Approach (Mba Series) 2nd Edition, Luke M. Froeb

Teach your MBA students how to use economics to solve business problems with this breakthrough text. Froeb/McCann's MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS: A PROBLEM SOLVING APPROACH, 2E covers traditional material using a problem-based pedagogy built around common business mistakes. Models are used sparingly, and then only to the extent that they help students figure out why mistakes are made, and how to fix them. This edition's succinct, fast-paced presentation and challenging, interactive applications place students in the role of a decision maker who has to identify mistakes that reduce profits, and propose solutions to bring profits back up. The lively book provides an excellent ongoing reference for students pursuing business careers. New chapters and updates highlight mistakes that precipitated the financial crisis. With MANAGERIAL ECONOMICS, 2E your students are taught to use economics to not only identify profitable decisions, but also how to implement them within an organization.

This text is clearly and concisely written. The author drives home his points through examples, which is a much more interesting approach than just offering theory and concept without regular application to follow. The YouTube video set that mirrors the chapters is an excellent complementary tool to the book to enhance the understanding of the topics and to further walk through the examples. A great learning tool for someone looking to better understand economics and the impact of economics in the world we live in today.

I needed books for college and did not have very long to wait. I received my books ordered in a timely manner. I had never ordered anything online and was not sure about how secure this would be but it was totally worth. After I had compared prices with other ways to purchase I realized I found the best deal. I would not hesitate to order books or products this way again if I need anything.

Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Engagement 2nd Edition, Mark Graban

Building on the success of the Shingo Prize-Winning first edition, Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Engagement, Second Edition explains how to use the Lean management system to improve safety, quality, access, and morale while reducing costs. Lean healthcare expert Mark Graban examines the challenges facing today’s health systems, including rising costs, falling reimbursement rates, employee retention, and patient safety.

The new edition of this international bestseller begins with an overview of Lean methods. It explains how Lean practices such as value stream mapping and process observation can help reduce wasted motion for caregivers, prevent delays for patients, and improve the long-term health of your organization.

Detailing the steps needed for a successful transition to a Lean culture, the book provides the understanding of Lean practices—including standardized work, error proofing, root cause problem solving, and daily improvement processes—needed to reduce common hospital errors. The balanced approach outlined in this book will guide you through the process of improving quality of service while reducing costs in your hospital.

Whether it is the ThedaCare story … Seattle Children’s … or Virginia Mason, the answer is in: Lean works. The question now for all of you is how are you going to do it? What is the leadership model required? … There will be many questions, and I believe starting with Mark Graban’s updated book Lean Hospitals is a good first step. … This book lays out the nuts and bolts of the Lean methodology and describes the more difficult challenges, which have to do with managing change. … I wish I could have read this in 2004, as it might have prevented some of the mistakes we made in our Lean transformation journey.

Lean health care is becoming a global movement. The reasons given are overrun costs, errors that compromise patient safety, time of patients wasted, and general bureaucratic inefficiency. In Lean terms the problem is how to eliminate waste. Health care is different than car making. This is true but many, many hospitals are finding the principles of the Toyota Production System apply well and are making remarkable improvements. Unfortunately the remarkable improvements are in specific areas and challenging to sustain because of a mysterious ingredient which the folks at Toyota seem to understand quite well--humans. The humans that health care exists to help also operate the system and are far from perfect. Toyota's system is actually designed to support the development of people, not to provide a quick fix set of technical solutions, and this takes time and patience. Many health care consultants have rebadged themselves as lean consultants and do not understand the real thinking behind the Toyota Production System. Mark Graban is an exception. He has worked hard to study the philosophy and stay true to the thinking of Toyota. His book is a welcome translation of the Toyota Production System into language any health care professional can understand.

The Product Manager's Desk Reference 1st Edition, Steven Haines

Whether a business sells tangible goods or services, product management holds a critical position in the organization's pursuit of profits. Because traditional departmental roles continually evolve, and because the business climate is so competitive, the job of product manager has become exceedingly critical—yet it remains very complex. The Product Manager's Desk Reference is the first book to lay down a comprehensive body of knowledge for this critical function, and it is the only book that can effectively guide product managers so that they can establish and build a successful career in product management.

Here, product management expert and practitioner Steven Haines clearly illustrates the entire product life cycle, from beginning to end. This outstanding work is packed with an array of best practices and helpful hints which are critical to the efficient management of products.

There are some books that are destined to become classics in their field. The Product Manager's Desk Reference by Steven Haines is one of those books. Anyone working not just in Product Management but also Marketing and Business Development, should take the time (and it is a hefty volume of 700 pages!) to read and absorb the comprehensive body of knowledge that Steven has organized around Product Management. If that sounds too daunting, be reassured by the fact that this is a reference book as well, so specific topics can be accessed easily without reading the entire book.

Steven demonstrates his vast knowledge of the true scope of the Product Manager's role. After explaining the basics in the first module that goes through the Foundational Elements of Product Management, the Desk Reference then explains the myriad details that position the Product Manager as the end to end owner of the business. Starting with the market analysis of the industry and competition, he then moves onto the fundamental elements of the role by teaching customer need analysis, market segmentation, forecasting and product planning. However he doesn't forget that a Product Manager needs to be the champion who can keep the process moving along with the Product Development team as well as being able to persuasively argue the business case to management to justify the product investment.

In particular, I appreciated that he sees the Marketing function as intricately linked to the Product with the Marketing Plan and details of the Launch synchronized together with the Communications Team and Sales Channels. In Module Four, he ups the ante with a clear-eyed explanation of auditing the launch results as input to running the business and going through the details of the entire lifecycle of Product Portfolio management, including End of Life.

The book has accessible Executive Summaries at the start of each chapter as well as easy to read diagrams and charts and a section at the end of each chapter called PMEQ that are a series of questions and suggestions for raising a Product Manager's Product Management Experience Quotient. Finally, there are two modules at the end about how to be professional and develop your career as a Product Manager and how to develop your employees, if you manage Product Managers. Taking this advice together with the last module, which is a Toolbox for Product Managers, leaves the reader with a full compliment of tools to successfully and methodically manage products, whatever the industry. As an endnote, I liked the extensive glossary, references and resources section, bibliography and comprehensive index.

This is the type of book that you will want to pick up often to check against an idea, template or list, so don't be surprised if it becomes dog eared as you find pages that you will want to get to quickly over and over again. This comprehensive guide should appeal to both neophyte product managers and those with experience, who just need to check a particular area or topic.

Data Analysis and Decision Making 4th Edition, S. Christian Albright

DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING is a teach-by-example approach, learner-friendly writing style, and complete Excel integration focusing on data analysis, modeling, and spreadsheet use in statistics and management science. The Premium Online Content Website (accessed by a unique code with every new book) includes links to the following add-ins: the Palisade Decision Tools Suite (@RISK, StatTools, PrecisionTree, TopRank, RISKOptimizer, NeuralTools, and Evolver); and SolverTable, allowing users to do sensitivity analysis. All of the add-ins is revised for Excel 2007 and notes about Excel 2010 are added where applicable.

If you are familiar with Winston-Albright's other books, this has a familiar look and feel. This book requires a solid basic knowledge of statistics and a good grasp of Excel, but does not require any mathematical intuitive leaps. Some linear programmings problems, some forecasting problems (you can download a trial version of the Palisades software if you don't get the CD), and nice treatment of regression analysis. Also, multiple regressions can now be done with the standard data analysis plugin for Excel, so you don't even need the Palisades software for much of the book.

It should be noted that if you are looking specifically for an Excel book, this isn't it since it does not show the line by line spreadsheet code. This would have made this book more popular.

Over 1000 pages of solid well written material. Although there's no calculus, it's certainly no "Dummies" book. There's a good 300 page explanation of confidence interval estimation through regression analysis with lots of practical advice about sorting through variables and deciding which ones really matter.

This book fits into the big gap between introductory texts and theory. It is also a good follow-up to Albright's "Practical Management Science," which was more focused on classic linear programming examples. This one is a little more statistical.

Managing Human Resources 9th Edition, Wayne Cascio

Wayne Cascio's Managing Human Resources, 9e is perfect for the general management student whose job inevitably will involve responsibility for managing people. It explicitly links the relationship between productivity, quality of work life, and profits to various human resource management activities and as such, strengthens the students' perception of human resource management as an important function, which affects individuals, organizations, and society. It is research-based and contains strong links to the applicability of this research to real business situations.

This is a well-written, clear, and practical text that covers all major areas of human resource management. It includes real-world examples and case studies that demonstrate clearly the topic at hand. Unlike many business texts, this one also addresses the perspectives of small businesses (which comprise over 90% of US businesses--why is this area so neglected?). Another big plus is that Managing Human Resources puts HR management into the context of the wider business objectives, integrating it with overall competitive strategies rather than separating the HR function from finance, marketing, or operations.

Easy to read, timely, informative, and taking an approach that is integrated with the broader business strategy...everything a useful text should be.

Organization Development and Change (with InfoTrac College Edition Printed Access Card) 9th Edition, Thomas G. Cummings

Market-leading ORGANIZATION DEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE, 9th Edition blends theory, concepts and applications in a comprehensive and clear presentation. The authors work from a strong theoretical foothold and apply behavioral science knowledge to the development of organizational structures, strategies, and processes.

Cummings OD book is perfectly designed to approach and delve into the field of OD smoothly and profoundly. Its first three chapters provide an excellent introduction to OD and how it is differentiated from overlapping organizational dynamics, primarily change management and organizational change. I respected this text's strategic analysis of the OD interventions and the pragmatic models of their implementation. Although developing business organizations sounds theoritical in its conceptual or abstract sense, this text gives you reasonable and sensible tools that help convert the OD theory to a tangible reality.

Having read hundreds of books on organisational development I have to say this is the best. It is true to say that this book has never been far from my side over the last nine years. It covers the wide range of activities required to transform organisations, providing intervention theory, diagnosis, learning and development structure design etc. This single work has informed 70% of my thinking towards change management. I cannot rate this book highly enough, its the most important book in my collection and has informed most of the change management work I have conducted. It does take quite a bit of study and even more practice. I want to thank Cummings and Worley for producing this book, it has changed the course of my career.

Organizational Behavior 6th Edition, Steven McShane

Organizational Behavior provides the essential OB knowledge to students in an accessible, student focused presentation. This text builds on the strengths of the main textbook, including a strong literature foundation, excellent readability, meaningful exhibits, global representation of examples, and presentation of both core and emerging topics. McShane/Von Glinow allows students to practice applying concepts via Connect.

Organizational Behavior, Sixth Edition is written in the context of these emerging workplace realities. This edition explains how emotions are the foundation of employee motivation, attitudes, and decisions; how social networks generate power and shape communication patterns; how self-concept influences individual behavior, team cohesion, and leadership; and how adopting a global mindset has become an important employee characteristic in this increasingly interconnected world. This book also presents the reality that organizational behavior is not just for managers; it is relevant and valuable to anyone who works in and around organizations.

I received the book on a Saturday and I ordered it that Friday so I was really, really surprised when UPS pulled up with the book. It came in great condition and the return processed was really easy. I'm getting ready to rent another book online now for my daughter for this semester.

Strategic Management 13th Edition, John Pearce

Contemporary research in strategic management, with an emphasis on conceptual tools and skills created by scholars and practitioners in the field are evident throughout Strategic Management, 13e. This thirteenth edition of Strategic Management has a refined message and a new subtitle: Planning for Domestic & Global Competition. This new edition is specially designed to accommodate the needs of strategy students worldwide in our fast-changing twenty-first century. The authors complement the focus on strategic planning for success within U.S. borders with unprecedented attention on how U.S. firms can leverage their domestic success by forming international partnerships and can achieve international success by becoming actively involved in global trade. These are exciting times, and they are reflected in this book. The new edition includes NEW or revised chapter material, 30 NEW cases, and dozens of NEW illustrations.

This text was required for my final Master's level class, so I had no choice in buying it. With that being said, it presented great up-to-date company examples within in each chapter. This text pulled together information from many other classes, and integrated them into usable methods for any size organization. Also noteworthy, is that globalization is addressed constantly. The glossary was low to moderate, and there was an abundance of case studies.

I should start by saying this book is not user-friendly; with a note that a text like this really shouldn't be when you consider it is a collegiate-level business tomb aimed at the B.S. of Business to M.B.A. level student. Socio-political stories, geared towards appeasing left-leaning professors, that do nothing to enhance the topic at hand found in many of today's "business" textbooks are thankfully wholly absent here. No frills, and no politically/affirmative action friendly pictures tucked neatly between sub-headings--just a well executed factual analysis of what you need to know in a rapid-fire format.

Successful Project Management (with Microsoft Project 2010) 5th Edition, Jack Gido

Gido/Clements' best-selling SUCCESSFUL PROJECT MANAGEMENT, 5E presents everything you need to know to work successfully in today's exciting project management environment, from how to organize and manage effective project teams, to planning, scheduling and cost management. Revised chapters now closely align with the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) framework to ensure you are mastering today's best management practices. Coverage of the latest business developments and challenges introduce issues, such as project constraints, the project charter, and how projects relate to an organization's strategic plan. You even gain experience working with the latest version of today's most popular project management software — Microsoft Project 2010 — using the trial version that comes with each new book.

Very good book, very useful and easy to understand. The only thing I didn't like about it is the glossary terms in the chapter are not listed at the end of the chapter. However, they are highlighted within the chapter and in the glossary section in the back of the book. Also the CD-Rom is only a trial and you will need to learn and play around with it. It helps make project management much easier to understand if you never knew anything about it before.

Understanding Business 9th Edition, William Nickels

Understanding Business by Nickels, McHugh, and McHugh has been the number one textbook in the introduction to business market for several editions for three reasons: (1) The commitment and dedication of an author team that teaches this course and believes in the importance and power of this learning experience, (2) we listen to our customers, and (3) the quality of our supplements package. We consistently look to the experts – full-time faculty members, adjunct instructors, and of course students – to drive the decisions we make about the text itself and the ancillary package. Through a series of focus groups, symposia, as well as full-book, single-chapter, revised manuscript reviews of both text and key ancillaries, we have heard the stories of more than 600 professors and their insights and experiences are evident on every page of the revision and in every supplement. As teachers of the course and users of their own materials, the author team is dedicated to the principles of excellence in business education. From providing the richest most current topical coverage to using dynamic pedagogy that puts students in touch with today’s real business issues, to creating groundbreaking and market-defining ancillary items for professors and students alike, Understanding Business leads the way.

Being somewhat of an entrepreneur, I decided to enhance my business background by taking an introductory course in business this Fall, 2011. This is the assigned text, and I prefer to get familiar with course materials as soon as published. Honestly, this text is not what I expected from an introductory textbook. It gives a solid overview of past and current business science. The online materials augmenting the text are impressive, and downloadable for the most part.

The topics discussed in the text are pertinent and current to issues being experienced both locally, nationally, and internationally: Business Trends; Business Ownership; Business Management; Human Resources; Marketing; Financial Resources.

The text is easy to read. It includes highlights of business personalities from the local, national, and international arenas, and why they are significant in the business world. The layout of the subject materials is highly organized and makes the taking of notes easy as well.

The online materials are designed to augment the text by offering study aides that can be downloaded and printed including practice tests, case studies with practice tests, videos, and more.

Overall, I find this text both informative and worth reading for anyone interested learning the foundations of business science regardless of whether it is for a college course or personal interest.
